Frequently asked questions about Sculptra
What is Sculptra?
RSculptra®, also known as poly-L-lactic acid, is a synthetic injectable material that is not only biocompatible (doesn’t harm the human body), but also biodegradable (broken down by the body). It is most widely known for its applications in facial lipoatrophy in HIV patients, but Poly-L-lactic acid has also been used for many years in dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants.
What is a Sculptra facelift?
With the success of sculptra use in facial fat loss and lipoatrophy for HIV patients, cosmetic surgeons in San Diego, La Jolla and around the country are using sculptra to perform minimally invasive facelifts. With a sculptra facelift, the folds that appear in naturally aging skin are minimized by filling in areas where natural fat loss has occurred. Patients who have had this procedure report incredible results while experiencing little down time in comparison with a fully invasive cosmetic facelift.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra is injected below the skin’s surface in the desired areas. It provides a gradual increase in skin thickness with visible results appearing within the first few treatment sessions. Sculptra does not correct the underlying causes of facial fat loss, but it will help improve appearance in patients experiencing lipoatrophy.
Will the results with Sculptra be immediate?
The results with Sculptra will not be immediate, but may appear so after the first treatment because of minor swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute the product. After the swelling goes down (a few days), patients won’t look much different. Sculptra takes time to gradually correct facial lipoatrophy; your healthcare provider will determine if additional injections are needed to further correct the fat loss you are experiencing.
How many Sculptra treatments are necessary?
As cases vary, you’re healthcare professional will help determine the appropriate number of treatments you’ll need. Patients who are experiencing extreme lipoatrophy (facial fat loss) may require between 3 and 6 treatment sessions for optimum results.
Are there any side effects with Sculptra treatments?
Although the side effects of sculptra are minimal, patients may experience small bumps under the skin at the treated areas. These bumps are generally not visible and can only be seen when pressing on the skin. Patients may also experience slight bleeding at the injection sites and minor discomfort and bruising or swelling with redness. Each of these side effects will subside as time passes.
Are Sculptra treatments permanent?
Treatment results will vary for each case; however, clinical studies have shown that sculptra treatments last for up to 2 years after the initial session. To maintain the desired effect, follow-up treatments may be necessary.
What is the cost of Sculptra injections in the San Diego and La Jolla area?
In San Diego and La Jolla, sculptra generally runs between $1,000 and $2,000 dollars per injection.
